Basic Field Settings

Each field in OpenForms can be customizable using the field settings. To access the settings, hover over the field, select the gear icon, and switch between the Basic, Display logic, and Advanced tabs to change the settings.

Text Field Settings

  • Required field?: Check this box to make this field mandatory.
  • Description: Add a note to appear below the field label.
  • Placeholder text: Enter default text to display in the field when a user opens the form.
  • Character limit: Set a maximum number of characters (including spaces and punctuation) for the field. The limit will display with the field, alongside a countdown of characters remaining.
  • Allow multiple lines of text?: Check this box to add additional Lines of text for the field. This does not affect the character limit.
  • Use a list for predictive search: Make the field a predictive search field by selecting a pre-made list to use as search options.
  • Browser autofill field name: Use the drop-down menu to select user information from their browser to autofill this field. Select turn off for this field if you don’t want any information to autofill.
  • Display logic: Show or hide this field based on the user’s previous responses. You can make the field read-only, hide it from respondents, or show or hide it based on specific circumstances.
  • CSS class: Style the field by referencing a CSS class name from Admin > Themes > your theme > Custom CSS styling.
  • Regular expression: Enter a formula for a regular expression to validate the format of the text respondents enter, such as a fixed prefix for a permit number.
  • Regular expression error message: Enter an error message to show if the user enters something that doesn’t match your Regular expression formula.
  • External ID: Add an external ID for use with a data connection. Only available for Team and Enterprise plans.
  • Data connection: Use the drop-down to select a data connection to apply to this field. Data connections are created by admins and validate or retrieve data from an external service. Only available on Team and Enterprise plans. 

Number Field Settings

  • Required field?: Check this box to make this field mandatory.
  • Description: Add a note to appear below the field label.
  • Placeholder text: Enter a default number to display in the field when a user opens the form.
  • Minimum number: Set a minimum number that users can enter. This limit will not show automatically, so you may want to add it to the Description.
  • Maximum number: Set a maximum number that users can enter. This limit will not show automatically, so you may want to add it to the Description.
  • Maximum decimal places: Set the maximum number of decimal places that users can enter in the field. Enter 0 to only allow whole numbers.
  • Add commas to long number: Check Yes to add commas to separate long numbers (e.g., 123,456,789). Commas will be visible in PDF responses and in the Responses tab, but will not be included in raw Excel data.
  • Display logic: Show or hide this field based on the user’s previous responses. You can make the field read-only, hide it from respondents, or show or hide it based on specific circumstances.
  • CSS class: Style the field by referencing a CSS class name from Admin > Themes > your theme > Custom CSS styling.
  • External ID: Add an external ID for use with a data connection. Only available for Team and Enterprise plans.

Dropdown Field Settings

  • Required field?: Check this box to make this field mandatory.
  • Description: Add a note to appear below the field label.
  • Use a list to populate field values: Use the drop-down menu to use a pre-made list to populate the option values.
  • Include 'Other' textbox option: Check Yes to include a textbox option for responses other than those listed. You can also change the Field label for this option.
  • Browser autofill field name: Use the drop-down menu to select user information from their browser to autofill this field. Select turn off for this field if you don’t want any information to autofill.
  • Display logic: Show or hide this field based on the user’s previous responses. You can make the field read-only, hide it from respondents, or show or hide it based on specific circumstances.

Checkbox Field Settings

  • Number of options user can select: Set a Minimum and Maximum number of options a user can check. This limit will not show automatically, so you may want to add it to the Description.

Radio Button Field Settings

  • Set a date or date range: Use the drop-down menu to Set a date or Set a date range. You can set these based on today's date or a response to another date field in the form. This limit will not show automatically, so you may want to add it to the Description.
  • Browser autofill field name: Use the drop-down menu to select user information from their browser to autofill this field. Select turn off for this field if you don’t want any information to autofill.

Email Field Settings

  • Required field?: Check this box to make this field mandatory.
  • Description: Add a note to appear below the field label.
  • Placeholder text: Enter default text to display in the field when a user opens the form.
  • Use this address when emailing users about submissions?: Check Yes to use this email address to send user's confirmation or reminder emails.
  • Require email confirmation?: Check Yes to require users to enter their email address twice to ensure it is correct.
  • Browser autofill field name: Use the drop-down menu to select user information from their browser to autofill this field. Select turn off for this field if you don’t want any information to autofill.
  • Display logic: Show or hide this field based on the user’s previous responses. You can make the field read-only, hide it from respondents, or show or hide it based on specific circumstances.
